Where tradition is alive

 

If you want to see lovely buildings then a visit to the quaint town of Appenzell is a must. We found a special place to watch the sunrise and were all alone: take a drive up into the hills and walk to the ruin of Clanx. The town below you and the hills and mountains surrounding it all is a magic place especially in the early morning sun light. Another time we stayed overnight to watch the famous Alpaufzug (cattle drive): Again, early in the morning you walk out into the streets of the town and you can watch farmers – young and old, all dressed in their traditional outfits and singing along whilst herding their goats and cows dressed with flower garlands and huge bells, from their winter base up into the fields in the alps.
