Bellinzona is the capital of the Italian speaking canton of Switzerland, Ticino, and most travellers pass the city to head further south to the lakes or to Italy. But the city with its 3 UNESCO World Heritage Site listed castles is well worth a stop. It's built at the foot of the San Gottardo and San Bernardino mountain passes. The building of three and not just one castle to defend the place, shows its strategic importance in the past. We especially liked the view from the Castello di Montebello down to Castelgrande.
