Christmas time at Rockefeller

It's time for Christmas shopping and this year you want to do something special and go to New York? It's certainly a cool experience! If you don’t want to take home only shopping bags, but some great photos too, then here are some tips! It takes less than a day to include this little sightseeing tour we did this time. Sure it's only a small selection of the Big Apple's highlights but it does cover some great sights:

After our New Years Eve visit and stay with best friends in Armonk, we spent the 1st and 2nd January in the Big Apple. As a starting point we decided to stay at the hotel SIXTY in Soho. A great area for food in the evening but also for a special photo subject: From the roof terrace you have a wonderful view towards the Empire State Building and the Chrysler Building. The roof terrace was closed in winter but we found a backdoor and had this amazing view just to ourselves.

Early next morning, we went straight to the famous Rockefeller Building. Like the Empire State Building this is an Art Deco house built from 1931 to 1939. From the Top of the Rock observation platform you have a marvelous view to the Empire State Building and even as far as the Statue of Liberty. What an iconic scene!

At the Rockefeller Center, you can also see the famous ice rink and the Christmas decorations - was a really great atmosphere there. Get a coffee and breakfast and then meander down 5th Avenue, past the Empire State Building, and if you can't get shopping off your mind, you can visit many big department stores!

From the Rockefeller Center, walk approx. 2km to reach the next landmark construction - the Flatiron Building. Can you believe that this skyscraper was built over 100 years ago in 1902! If only the architects in the 70‘s would have had the same taste!

Further south, we walked through Soho to our next destination - the beautiful Brooklyn Bridge that was finished in 1883. It was the 2nd of January and the city was very quiet - until we got to the bridge, where there were crowds crossing the bridge. Here you have a chance to capture the bridge together with the new One World Trade Center.

Slowly we managed to make our way across the bridge that crosses the Hudson River. From there we went to a most iconic and unique spot in New York where the Manhattan Bridge pillar is seen between the brick houses with the Empire State Building in the background. Wow!! I couldn't stop staring at this magic view and there was no time pressure since Clare found a really cool shoe store just around the corner - that was even open on 2nd January!!

As we were flying back home that afternoon, there was no more time to walk back to our hotel so we took a taxi back to Soho and enjoyed the last hours looking at modern constructions and some amazing graffiti. New York is certainly a very special city and not to be missed! We will see you again, New York!!
