Highlights in Switzerland:
Silvesterchlausen

Silvesterchlausen, Urnäsch
Appenzell
A Swiss tradition at its best
An unforgettable experience is to go and watch one of the two – yes two – New Year’s processions! It’s one of the most enjoyable winter traditions in Switzerland and dates back to the fifteenth century: the “Silvesterchlausen”. On the last day of our calendar year and the last day of the old Julian calendar (13th of January) – the locals dress up as the 3 typical characters for this event: «beautiful», «ugly» and «forest & nature». They wear traditional masks and colourfully amazing robes. Some of the hand-made displays on their head-dresses are just mind blowing, ranging from perfectly sculptured miniature village life to farming, cheese-making and many other things! They go door to door ringing their bells, yodelling and wishing everyone Happy New Year! There, they are given hot wine or grog - the atmosphere is truly special and a real sight to see and be part of!
